July Special Events at the Oakland Public Library (Children’s Dept.)


      The 2021 “TAILS AND TALES” Summer Reading Club kicks off Tuesday, June 29th from 1:00 to 2:00pm. The Good Humor Ice Cream Truck will be outside the Library with free ice cream for Oakland children! Registration and an ice cream voucher is required and supply is limited. Reading Club materials will also be available for pick up. Small prizes will be awarded all summer long for eager readers! Thanks to the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library, this is just the beginning of many great things to come this summer!

  You’ll have more fun than a barrel of monkeys during the “TAILS AND TALES” Summer Reading Club! The festivities kicked off at the end of June, but there is plenty of time left to join in! Pre-readers and Readers will be using the READsquared online registration/tracking software to earn small prizes for every goal met. Programs will once again be in-person and held outside under the Library’s tent. There will be something for everyone! Thanks to the New Friends of the Library, all programs are free of charge!

     Ms. Valerie and her wonderful “Jiggly Wiggly” music program will be held on Friday, July 2nd from 11:00 to 11:45am. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, will enjoy music and movement activities. The program will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 16th. Group size will be limited.

     Preschool Story Times for three to five-year-olds will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Tuesday, July 6th to Thursday, August 5th from 11:00 to 11:30am. The programs will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. Both sessions will include stories, songs and fingerplays, and the Tuesday story time will also offer a short walk. Weekly registration is required. Group size will be limited.

     Craft Bags (to go) will be available each Wednesday from July 7th to August 4th during the summer. Oakland children of all ages may come into the Children’s Dept. OR call ahead for curbside pick-up for the craft bags. One craft bag per child, please. Registration is not required.

     Oakland children, ages 5 & up, will be creating garden stepping stones on Thursday, July 8th from 3:45 to 4:30pm. Children will be able to take their project home, and place it in a favorite spot. All materials will be provided. The program will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 23rd. Group size will be limited.

     Chris Flynn will present his special blend of songs, musical instruments, and audience participation on Friday, July 9th from 11:00 to 11:45am. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, are invited to attend this “Magical Melodies” program with a caregiver. The program will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 23rd. Group size will be limited.

     Unique Creatures will visit the Oakland Public Library on Thursday, July 15th from 3:45 to 4:30pm. Oakland children, ages 5 & up, will be introduced to a variety of live animals! The program will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. It is sponsored by the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 30th. Group size will be limited.

     Join Ms. Jolie on Friday, July 16th from 11:00 to 11:45am for her fabulous “Move and Groove” music program. Oakland children, ages 2 & up, are invited to attend. The program will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, June 30th. Group size will be limited.

     Mad Science of Northeast NJ will present their animal-themed program, “Tales and Tails”, on Thursday, July 22nd. Oakland children, ages 5 & up, will learn how animals move, see, and evade predators. Powerful defenses, such as electricity, toxic venom, and gooey slime will be explored. Two sessions of this fun-filled event will be offered. The first session will be held at 2:30pm, and the second session will begin at 3:45pm. The program will be held outside on the Oakland Public Library’s lawn. It is sponsored by the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, July 7th. Group sizes will be limited.

It is sponsored by the New Friends of the Oakland Public Library. Registration is required, and begins Wednesday, July 14th. Group size will be limited.
